6 Tips on Growing Aquilegia Plants

Aquilegia plants are also known as Columbines. These drought-tolerant plants are capable of surviving in various types of lighting and soil conditions. If you want to grow a few in your garden, there are a few things you need to know. This article will give you six tips on care and growing Aquilegia plants.

Light

Aquilegias are capable of growing in full sun. However, it’s best that you place them in a location that will provide them with shade from the hot afternoon sun.

Soil

Aquilegia plants can be grown in a wide variety of garden soils. You just need to make sure that the soil is well drained, but also doesn’t dry out very quickly. It is also best that the soil has plenty of organic matter.

Planting

If you want to grow Aquilegia plants from a transplant, you’ll need to be careful not to plant it too deeply. The transplant’s surface soil should be level with the ground soil. Also, you should put plants no less than 16 inches apart from each other.

Flowers

Columbines won’t produce flowers in their first year of growth. You can look to expect blooms during the second year though. Some varieties of Aquilegia have flowers that face downwards while others have flowers with upright growth.

Pruning

You will need to prune your Aquilegia plant although the timing is up to you. Some gardeners prefer to prune the plant in the early stages of spring before new growth starts to appear. Others prune the plant in the fall since it prevents the plant from self-seeding.

Pests

Aquilegia plants experience the most problems with leaf miners. These pests cause damage to the plant’s foliage which you can easily notice if you’re paying attention. If you see signs of damage, you will need to remove the leaves from the plant and get rid of them.

These are a few tips on taking care of Aquilegia plants. Make sure that you plant them in soil that is well-drained. You can also grow them in full sun, but it’s best that you provide them with shade from the afternoon sun.
